Chennai, Sep 14 (NationPress) The government of Tamil Nadu is embarking on an ambitious initiative to erect the world's tallest statue of Lord Muruga at the Subramaniaswamy temple situated in Marudhamalai. This project is anticipated to significantly enhance spiritual tourism in the area.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) Department has proposed a 184-foot tall statue, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 110 crore.

The entire endeavor, which encompasses associated facilities, is projected to cost around Rs 146.83 crore. Officials have indicated that funding will mainly come from donations.

Initial preparations for this project commenced in May 2025. In addition to the statue, a large hexagonal complex is planned, which will include a museum, parking, and other amenities aimed at accommodating a vast number of devotees and visitors.

To facilitate the installation of the statue, the HR and CE Department has been searching for appropriate land in the Marudhamalai foothills.

After several consultations, the department has identified a 2.5 acres vacant plot behind the local bus stand. Due to the project's spatial requirements, plans are also underway to acquire an additional 2.5 acres from the neighboring area.

On Friday, senior officials from the HR and CE Department inspected the proposed site and confirmed that a formal meeting will be held at the Coimbatore District Collectorate soon to finalize land acquisition processes.

"This statue is envisioned as not only a monumental religious symbol but also as a cultural landmark that is set to attract pilgrims and tourists from around the globe," stated a senior official.

Once completed, the Marudhamalai statue will exceed the scale and prominence of existing Muruga idols, further establishing Tamil Nadu as a hub for world-class religious attractions.

Authorities believe this project will also create substantial local employment during the construction phase and stimulate ancillary economic activities linked to tourism.

With plans in motion, the Marudhamalai foothills are poised to host a towering tribute to Lord Muruga, solidifying Coimbatore's standing on the nation's spiritual and cultural landscape.
