89% of reserved railway tickets booked online in June 2025–26: Railways
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nearly 89 per cent of all reserved railway tickets in India were purchased through online platforms between June 2025 and June 2026, the Ministry of Railways disclosed on Wednesday, 22 July. Out of a total 65.08 crore reserved tickets booked during the period, the overwhelming majority were transacted digitally, underscoring a structural shift in how Indians access rail travel.
Key Figures from Parliament
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who holds the portfolios of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, shared the data in a written reply to questions in the Lok Sabha. He attributed the surge in online bookings to enhanced digital services and a strengthened reservation infrastructure. This is the highest online share recorded for reserved tickets, reflecting the cumulative impact of years of investment in digital rail access.
RailOne App: One Platform for All Services
Indian Railways launched the RailOne mobile application on 1 July 2025, consolidating all major passenger-facing services onto a single interface available on both Android and Apple app stores. The app allows passengers to book reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets, check train schedules, track PNR status, and raise grievances through the RailMadad portal.
Since its launch, RailOne has been downloaded more than 4.55 crore times. It currently facilitates approximately 9.65 lakh ticket bookings every day — comprising around 2.75 lakh reserved tickets and 6.89 lakh unreserved tickets — enabling passengers to complete reservations directly from their mobile phones.
RailMadad Grievance Platform Performance
The ministry also highlighted the performance of RailMadad, Indian Railways' integrated grievance redressal system, which accepts passenger complaints and assistance requests via its app, website, helpline number 139, and SMS. During financial year 2025–26, the platform handled 6,94,368 assistance requests and recorded 89.49 per cent excellent or satisfactory feedback from users — a metric the ministry cited as evidence of improving service quality.
Cybersecurity and Anti-Fraud Measures
To safeguard ticket booking — particularly during high-demand Tatkal reservations — the ministry said several cyber security and anti-fraud measures have been put in place. Aadhaar authentication is now mandatory for online Tatkal bookings to prevent misuse through fake or multiple accounts. Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) verification has also been introduced on selected trains to improve fairness in ticket allocation.
The reservation system is protected by multiple layers of cybersecurity, including application-level security controls, network firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, web application firewalls, anti-bot technology, and a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) mitigation infrastructure with an aggregated capacity of nearly 30 Gbps. This makes the platform one of the more robustly secured public-sector ticketing systems in the country.
With RailOne downloads crossing 4.55 crore and daily bookings approaching 10 lakh, Indian Railways' digital transition is no longer aspirational — it is operational. The next benchmark will be whether grievance resolution and cybersecurity infrastructure can scale at the same pace as user adoption.
