New Delhi, Oct 16 (NationPress) The demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills is on the rise in India, with 11.7 percent of job listings explicitly referencing AI in September. This marks an increase from 10.6 percent three months prior and 8.2 percent from the previous year, as reported on Thursday.

A significant portion of AI-related opportunities is found in the tech sector, yet the demand is expanding across various fields. Almost 39 percent of roles in data and analytics highlight AI, followed by 23 percent in software development, 18 percent in insurance, and 17 percent in scientific research.

According to the Indeed Hiring Lab report, the need for AI skills spans multiple engineering disciplines, with industrial engineering leading at 17 percent, followed by mechanical engineering at 11 percent and electrical engineering at 9.2 percent.

Despite this surge in AI-focused job postings, overall listings on Indeed in India experienced a 0.8 percent decrease this month, marking the sixth consecutive decline and reflecting a 16.2 percent drop year-over-year.

While Indian job postings remain 69 percent above pre-pandemic levels, they have decreased by 22 percent since peaking in January 2023.

Callam Pickering, Indeed’s Senior Economist for APAC, noted, “India ranks prominently compared to other markets, with only Singapore having a higher proportion of postings mentioning AI. Many employers in India are fully embracing artificial intelligence.”

Each month, the Indian workforce is steadily moving towards more formal employment arrangements, leading to job creation in the formal sector outpacing overall employment growth.

This shift is a contributing factor to the stronger job postings in India relative to other markets on Indeed, both during the post-pandemic recovery and the ensuing slowdown, according to the report.

As AI continues to redefine hiring criteria, the demand for highly skilled professionals has intensified. Many employers are actively seeking candidates skilled in AI-related tools such as data analytics and automation, areas where current talent remains underrepresented.

Point of View

It is imperative to recognize the burgeoning demand for AI skills in India. This trend not only reflects the nation's technological advancements but also highlights the urgent need for a workforce that is adept at navigating the complexities of AI. The ongoing shift towards formal employment structures further underscores the need for a skilled workforce that can sustain this growth.
