Is a War of Words Between BJP and Congress Erupting Over US Trade Deal Claims?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) A fierce political clash arose on Friday regarding alleged statements about farmers and a proposed trade agreement with the US, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress exchanged strong accusations over a privilege motion and claims of spreading misinformation.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh dismissed the Opposition's claims as unfounded.
"What issue do farmers have? Just like the Rafale controversy, lies are sowing confusion among the masses," he stated.
Referring to comments made by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Union Minister Singh asserted that there would be "no compromise on farmers' interests."
"Isn't this just an attempt to spread misinformation? They aim to create chaos in the country; they want to incite a civil war," he alleged.
Union Minister Singh also mentioned that those who are raising the issue should not only confront a privilege motion, but a legal case should also be entertained.
"No joint statement has been issued or signed yet. The process of questions and answers is still in progress, and misinformation is being circulated. Those who don’t even know what a field or farm is are speaking about farmers' welfare," he added.
In response to the privilege motion, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari labeled it politically driven.
"Anyone with even a minimal understanding of parliamentary procedure would find this proposal laughable. It lacks substance and is merely a tactic for cheap publicity," he stated.
Defending Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, Tiwari asserted, "He cannot be intimidated or threatened. He stands for farmers, laborers, and the nation."
Congress MP Rajeev Shukla echoed this sentiment, stating, "A response has already been provided by Rahul Gandhi. Do what you wish. We will persist in our fight against the US trade deal."
He claimed that India's interests have been compromised in the proposed trade arrangement with the US.
This exchange highlights the escalating political tensions as both parties dig in on issues related to farmers and international trade negotiations.
