What sparked the war of words between BJP and Congress over US trade deal claims?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) A fierce political clash ignited on Friday regarding contentious remarks related to farmers and a proposed trade agreement with the US. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress exchanged strong accusations over a privilege motion and claims of misinformation.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh dismissed the Opposition's allegations as groundless.
"What farmers’ issue? Lies, much like those surrounding Rafale, are sowing confusion among people," he stated.
Referring to comments made by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, Union Minister Singh emphasized that there would be no compromise on farmers' interests.
"Then what is this if not a campaign of misinformation? They aim to create confusion in the country; they seek to incite a civil war in the nation," he asserted.
Singh also mentioned that those raising the issue should not only face a privilege motion but also that a legal case should be contemplated.
"No joint statement has been issued or signed yet. The process of questions and answers is still ongoing, and misinformation continues to spread. Those who are unfamiliar with what a field or farm is are discussing farmers' welfare," he added.
In response to the privilege motion, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari labeled it as politically motivated.
"Anyone with a basic grasp of parliamentary procedure can only scoff at this proposal. It is empty and intended solely for cheap publicity. It holds no substance," he remarked.
Defending the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Tiwari stated, "Rahul Gandhi cannot be intimidated or threatened. He stands for farmers, laborers, and the nation."
Congress MP Rajeev Shukla echoed similar thoughts, asserting, "Rahul Gandhi has already responded. Do as you wish; we will persist in our fight against the US deal."
He claimed that India's interests had been compromised in the proposed trade arrangement with the US.
This exchange highlights the escalating political tensions as both parties remain steadfast on issues concerning farmers and international trade negotiations.
