New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) Indian Railways has successfully utilized 80.54% of its designated capital expenditure (capex) during the initial three quarters of the current fiscal year (FY26) as of December, amounting to Rs 2,03,138 crore out of the total Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) of Rs 2,52,200 crore, as reported by the government on Monday.
This marks a 6.54% increase in GBS utilization compared to the same timeframe in the previous year (December 2024), according to the Ministry of Railways.
The spending has been primarily directed towards enhancing safety, expanding capacity, modernizing infrastructure, and improving passenger facilities.
The ministry noted that for safety-related projects, 84% of the allocated budget has been utilized.
Regarding capacity expansion, out of Rs 1,09,238 crore allocated, Rs 76,048 crore (or 69%) has been spent. Expenditure on customer amenities has reached 80% utilization, totaling Rs 9,575 crore by December 2025.
The outcomes of sustained capital investment over the past decade are reflected in the operation of 164 Vande Bharat train services, 30 Amrit Bharat train services, the rollout of the Kavach automatic train protection system, achieving over 99% electrification of the broad-gauge network, alongside extensive developments in new lines, gauge conversion, track doubling, traffic facilities, and investments in public sector units and metropolitan transport systems.
"These efforts have greatly enhanced speed, safety, and passenger comfort while maintaining affordable rail travel. With the upcoming inauguration of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance rail travel," stated the ministry.
Furthermore, Indian Railways is committed to delivering faster, safer, and world-class rail travel at reasonable prices across the nation, positioning itself as a future-ready organization aligned with the vision of a modern and interconnected country.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India is expected to welcome its first Bullet Train on August 15, 2027. This ambitious project covers 508 km between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, with 352 km located in Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra. According to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL), over 85% of the corridor—approximately 465 km—is being constructed on elevated viaducts, with 326 km already completed.
