Should India Prioritize Industrial Electronics to Become a Manufacturing Leader?

Synopsis

India's electronics sector is at a crossroads. With a target of $500 billion by 2030, experts argue that prioritizing industrial electronics is essential for national growth. This article dives into the pivotal role of industrial electronics in shaping India's manufacturing landscape and the high-skilled job opportunities it presents.

Key Takeaways

  • Industrial electronics is critical for automating factories and urban infrastructure.
  • Collaboration between government and industry is necessary to develop a strategic roadmap.
  • Investment in talent development and R&D is essential for growth.
  • High-skilled job potential exists in robotics and AI.
  • Acquisitions like Amber's enhance access to advanced technologies.

New Delhi, Aug 4 (NationPress) The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has emphasized the immediate need to focus on industrial electronics as a key component of India's ambitious $500 billion electronics manufacturing goal by 2030.

The trajectory of India's electronics sector depends on the production of products that will enhance automation in factories, cities, and transportation systems, as stated.

Through its Steering Committee on Industrial Electronics and Infrastructure, ICEA collaborates with government and industry leaders to formulate a dedicated policy and a strategic roadmap for industrial electronics, the statement elaborated.

This committee, comprising executives from Delta Electronics, Infineon Technologies, Festo, Fanuc, and others, aims to deliver a market analysis focusing on technology accessibility, regulatory landscapes, and ecosystem enhancement to establish India as a global frontrunner in industrial electronics.

“Recognizing the industrial electronics sector as a national strategic imperative is crucial. It functions as the brain and nervous system of every sophisticated manufacturing environment. Without expertise in industrial automation, India cannot genuinely claim a leadership position in manufacturing,” stated ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo.

Additionally, industrial electronics offers substantial potential for generating high-skilled jobs, particularly in fields like embedded systems, automation software, robotics, and AI-integrated systems, Mohindroo remarked.

India needs to channel investments into talent development, research and development, and incentives to expand this industry, aspiring to become a global design and manufacturing nucleus for industrial electronics.

Manish Walia, VP of Delta Electronics, noted, “The industrial electronics sector is the technological foundation of contemporary manufacturing infrastructure, fueling smart factories, robotics, intelligent grids, automated systems, and next-generation transport and logistics frameworks. It is not merely a vertical but a horizontal force driving all manufacturing sectors.”

Recently, Amber Enterprises India acquired a controlling interest in Unitronics Ltd, based in Israel, enhancing India's access to cutting-edge industrial automation technologies and supporting national objectives of self-sufficiency, export competitiveness, and job creation.

Jasbir Singh, Executive Chairman and CEO of Amber Group, expressed that this agreement will boost India's industrial automation by facilitating the country's transition toward smart factories and digitally-driven production systems.

Point of View

Embracing industrial electronics is not just beneficial; it's essential for India’s manufacturing ambitions. The government and industry must collaborate to build an ecosystem that fosters innovation and job creation in this critical area.
