India Fully Prepared to Tackle Challenges Amid West Asia Turmoil: Sarbananda Sonowal
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized on Monday that India is fully equipped to handle any challenges arising from the recent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that prompt and well-coordinated actions are essential to maintain stability in maritime trade operations.
In an interview with Times Now, Sonowal highlighted the government's swift actions to mitigate impacts on India’s supply chains and its global trade connections.
Following the recent tensions between the United States and Iran, he detailed how the ministry has established a real-time monitoring system to oversee vessel movements, cargo congestion, and port operations across the nation.
“This initiative was bolstered by close collaboration with major ports and key stakeholders to maintain an uninterrupted flow of logistics,” he explained.
“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have been instructed to implement all necessary measures to minimize disruptions and ensure the continuity of supply chains,” Sonowal stated, mentioning that ports have been encouraged to adopt innovative strategies, enhance storage capacity, and refine logistics planning.
According to the minister, these coordinated efforts successfully mitigated the effects of the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, allowing trade operations to stabilize with minimal adverse effects.
In response to concerns about cargo delays, Sonowal reported that approximately 90% of the backlog caused by the disruptions has been resolved across major ports.
“While the situation has mostly returned to normal and vessel movements have stabilized, we continue to monitor closely to address any emerging challenges and ensure the smooth transit of traffic heading to India,” he stated.
Additionally, the government has ramped up its initiatives for electric vehicles and reinforced domestic capabilities in critical minerals for clean energy technologies to lessen reliance on oil imports due to fluctuating global prices and potential supply chain disruptions stemming from the West Asia crisis.
