India's Rooftop Solar Capacity Surges by 9.56 GW
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 25 (NationPress) Following the launch of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in February 2024, the nation has successfully added 9,566.89 megawatts (MW) of rooftop solar energy capacity, as announced by the government on Wednesday.
These rooftop solar setups across one crore households are projected to generate approximately 1,000 billion units of renewable energy and reduce 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions over a span of 25 years, according to government estimates.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is expected to create around 1.7 million jobs in various sectors including manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales, installation, operation and maintenance services, as well as financial services, as stated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
In addition, the government shared that India aims to achieve a Green Hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes annually by 2030.
According to Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, around 8000 tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity has already been established in India as of February 2026.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) strives to position India as a global center for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The World Bank Group has indicated that renewable energy constitutes 50-70% of the overall cost of producing green hydrogen.
Residential consumers with grid-connected electricity from local DISCOMs can benefit from the PMSG: MBY scheme for the installation of rooftop solar systems by applying through the National Portal.
To facilitate the adoption of rooftop solar and meet the goal of installation for one crore households, the government has implemented a streamlined online process for applications and subsidy disbursement, which goes directly to the residential consumer's bank account through the National Portal.
Additionally, applicants can access collateral-free loans from nationalized banks at a concessional interest rate of the repo rate plus 50 basis points, currently set at 5.75% per annum, with a repayment period of 10 years.
