New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) Kenya has embraced India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), which includes UPI-style instant payments and DigiLocker-style digital document storage, aiming to enhance its governance framework, according to a recent report.

Kenya's bureaucratic system, plagued by delays and inconsistent identification processes, is set to revolutionize its operations with the adoption of Indian digital solutions. The initiative is expected to expedite public services and stimulate the digital economy in this rapidly growing African nation, as reported by India Narrative.

"From 2023 to 2026, pilot programs integrating UPI-style payments with DigiLocker document storage signify a daring South-South collaboration, placing Kenya at the forefront of digital innovation in Africa while minimizing bureaucratic obstacles for its citizens," the report stated.

The UPI integration will leverage unique personal identification numbers assigned to Kenyans, known as Maisha Namba, to facilitate educational reforms and platforms like Knec.

The aim of these pilot programs is to merge identity verification, payment processing, and secure document validation, enhancing government-to-citizen services, educational initiatives, and small business transactions while working alongside existing mobile-money services like M-Pesa, the report indicated.

Once fully implemented, these changes could significantly enhance remittances, merchant payments, and G2C services, complementing M-Pesa and reducing fraud risks.

Initial pilot outcomes are projected for April 2026, with improvements in ID processing times, reduced corruption, and increased sovereignty, according to the report, which adds that "Kenya is not merely adopting; it is customizing DPI to fit African contexts."

Tools similar to DigiLocker are expected to streamline verification from weeks to mere minutes, liberating Kenyans from long queues, while the integration of UPI with Maisha Namba could positively impact various sectors, including education and healthcare, capitalizing on Kenya's 60% technology penetration to facilitate digital payments.

India’s digital framework, featuring Aadhaar IDs, UPI payments, and DigiLocker vaults, has transformed digital reforms for 1.4 billion people, with UPI accounting for 70% of transactions by 2023-24 and empowering those without bank accounts, the report noted.

DigiLocker currently serves 500 million users, managing billions of secure documents, illustrating that DPI can provide inclusivity without the high costs associated with traditional legacy systems.

In February 2026, Kenya formalized an implementation agreement for a locally developed DigiLocker pilot, tailored by India’s NeGD during the 'India AI Impact Summit'.
