What Are the Key Highlights for West Bengal in the Union Budget?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 1 (NationPress) Two significant outcomes for West Bengal from the Union Budget proposals for the fiscal year 2026-27, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, are a dedicated freight corridor and a high-speed railway corridor.
During her budget presentation in Parliament, the finance minister revealed plans for seven high-speed rail corridors nationwide, including a route that will link West Bengal with Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This corridor will connect Siliguri in the Darjeeling district with Varanasi.
The seven high-speed corridors consist of routes including Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri. These corridors aim to connect pivotal economic centers, IT hubs, infrastructure clusters, and emerging cities.
Additionally, a dedicated freight corridor will establish a link from Dankuni in the Hooghly district of West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat, Modi's home state where he served as Chief Minister before taking on the role of Prime Minister.
However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee argued that this freight corridor is not a new initiative, stating, “I proposed this in my railway budget speech back in 2009 when I was the railways minister. Unfortunately, progress has been minimal. There’s actually nothing for West Bengal in this budget. The BJP seems to be anticipating their defeat in the upcoming Assembly elections here, leading to our state’s neglect in the budget proposals,” she commented to the press before heading to New Delhi.
Moreover, Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a member of Lok Sabha, criticized the Union Finance Minister for excluding West Bengal from her address. He pointed out, “In her one hour and 25 minutes speech, West Bengal was not mentioned even once. There was no focus on youth, farmers, or employment. This budget lacks identity, substance, and vision.”
