New Delhi/Seoul, June 2 (NationPress) Kia, the second-largest automaker in South Korea by sales, announced on Monday that its sales increased by 1.7 percent in May compared to the previous year, driven primarily by consistent overseas demand for sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

Kia, a subsidiary of the leading local automotive company Hyundai Motor Co., reported sales of 269,148 vehicles in May, up from 264,699 units during the same month last year, according to a press release.

Domestic sales saw a decline of 2.4 percent year-on-year, totaling 45,003 units, while international sales rose by 2.6 percent to reach 223,817 units, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.

For the period from January to May, total sales climbed by 2.3 percent to 1,316,233 units, compared to 1,286,496 units in the same timeframe last year.

Domestic sales experienced a slight decrease of 0.4 percent, totaling 230,420 units versus 231,237 units, while international sales increased by 2.9 percent to 1,084,368 units from 1,053,674 units.

The Sportage compact SUV emerged as the most popular model in May, with 48,091 units sold globally, followed closely by the subcompact Seltos with 21,889 units sold.

In a remarkable display of growth, Kia India reported 22,315 vehicle dispatches in May, marking a significant year-on-year growth of 14.43 percent compared to 19,500 units sold in May 2024.

Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and National Head of Sales and Marketing at Kia India, stated, "Our impressive sales in May reflect the increasing popularity of Kia's diverse product line across various segments."

"This trend confirms our commitment to enhancing and expanding our product lineup to meet evolving customer preferences," he added.

Kia India has successfully dispatched nearly 1.5 million vehicles from its Anantapur plant, comprising over 1.2 million domestic sales and more than 367,000 exports. With over 450,000 connected cars on Indian roads, Kia is recognized as a leader in the connected car sector in the nation.
