How Did the US Benefit from Skilled Indians, According to Musk?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the United States has reaped enormous benefits from the influx of talented Indians who have relocated there, significantly contributing to the country’s technology and business landscapes.
In a discussion on the podcast “WTF is” hosted by Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, Musk emphasized the invaluable role played by individuals of Indian descent, particularly in fields such as engineering, science, and entrepreneurship. He remarked that these contributors continue to drive innovation and progress across various sectors.
Musk characterized the H-1B visa program as essential to the US economy but cautioned that certain companies have exploited the system. He pointed out that the core issue is the misuse of the program rather than the program itself.
“It would be correct to say that some outsourcing firms have manipulated the H-1B system, and we must put an end to this exploitation. However, I do not subscribe to the idea of abolishing the H-1B program,” he stated.
He further warned that eliminating this visa would negatively impact the US economy, asserting, “I believe they fail to grasp how detrimental that would be.”
In September, former US President Donald Trump announced that the cost for new H-1B applications would rise to $100,000, a significant increase from the previous range of approximately $2,000 to $5,000 that employers were required to pay to engage foreign talent.
Musk also criticized former President Joe Biden for his immigration policies, claiming that the absence of border controls resulted in “massive illegal immigration” and a “negative selection effect.”
Responding to fears about immigrants taking jobs from American citizens, Musk disclosed that his companies often find it challenging to locate highly skilled workers, and that international talent is crucial for filling this gap.
He noted that large-scale advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are necessary to address the United States’ increasing debt burden, which he described as “insanely high,” with interest payments expected to rise further.
Musk encouraged Indian entrepreneurs to strive to “be a net contributor to society,” highlighting that creating valuable products and services is the path to true financial success, rather than merely pursuing wealth.
