NASA's Artemis II Astronauts Capture Spectacular Earth Images Near the Moon
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 4 (NationPress) The astronauts aboard NASA's Artemis II mission have transmitted breathtaking images of our planet as they drew nearer to the moon. Commander Reid Wiseman captured a stunning view of Earth through the Orion capsule's window, showcasing a curved slice of the planet. Another photograph displayed the entire Earth, adorned with its vast oceans and illuminated by fluffy white clouds, alongside a brilliant green aurora, according to NASA.
This marks the first astronaut mission to the moon in over fifty years, as various reports indicate.
NASA shared on the X platform, "In the image of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew, we can see the bright lights of human activity. In the lower right, sunlight highlights the edge of the planet."
The initial photograph used a longer shutter speed to capture more light from Earth, while the second image, taken with a shorter exposure, accentuated the glow of Earth during nighttime.
Another striking image illustrated the sharp contrast between night and day on Earth, known as the terminator.
NASA aptly stated, "Whether awake or dreaming, we are all together on this planet."
“It’s wonderful to think that aside from our four brave crew members, everyone is represented in this image,” remarked Lakiesha Hawkins, an exploration systems leader, who added that the mission is progressing smoothly.
As of late Friday afternoon, NASA's crew was located over 180,000 kilometers from Earth, with 240,000 kilometers remaining until they reach lunar orbit, expected to happen by Monday.
The team, consisting of three Americans and one Canadian, plans to execute a flyby around the moon in their Orion capsule and will return directly to Earth without landing. They are the first travelers to the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.
