New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, engaged with the courageous crew of the Indian-flagged LPG vessels, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, conveying the nation’s heartfelt appreciation for their bravery and steadfast commitment in guaranteeing the secure transport of essential LPG cargo.

During a video conferencing session with the seafarers, Sonowal described the meeting as a “sincere expression of national gratitude” to the crew members who achieved the safe delivery of vital LPG supplies despite navigating through a perilous maritime landscape.

“It is an immense honor to acknowledge the valor, commitment, and professionalism exhibited by the crew of Shivalik and Nanda Devi. Your endeavors have fortified India’s energy security by ensuring the safe passage of crucial LPG cargo,” he remarked.

The minister highlighted that both vessels operated in a high-risk area for nearly two weeks amidst increasing security concerns before proceeding to India. He commended the crew's exceptional composure, vigilance, and professionalism under difficult circumstances.

The interaction was joined by Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Shyam Jagannathan, Director General of Shipping; Capt. B.K. Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director of the Shipping Corporation of India; Capt. Sukhmeet Singh and the crew of Shivalik; along with Capt. Dhiraj Kumar Agrawal and the crew of Nanda Devi.

Previously, the two Indian-flagged LPG carriers successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz before reaching India on March 16 and 17, as the government keeps a vigilant eye on maritime operations in the Persian Gulf region amid the shifting geopolitical landscape in West Asia.

Both Shivalik and Nanda Devi transported approximately 92,712 metric tonnes of LPG, crossing the Strait of Hormuz early Friday (March 13, 2026).

“Seafarers are the unsung champions of global trade. Distanced from your loved ones, you ensure the safe arrival of essential cargo,” Sonowal stated, underscoring the indispensable role of maritime personnel in maintaining global supply chains.

The Union Minister further underscored that the successful journeys of these two Indian-flagged vessels, fully crewed by Indian seafarers, exemplify the strength and resilience of India’s maritime workforce.

Sonowal also paid tribute to the families of the seafarers, recognizing them as a crucial support system propelling their dedication and service. He congratulated the masters, officers, and crew of both vessels, asserting that their accomplishment serves as a benchmark of professionalism and commitment, and wished them safe journeys ahead.

The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) is actively monitoring the situation in collaboration with ship owners, Recruitment and Placement Service License (RPSL) agencies, and Indian diplomatic missions in the area. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is directly overseeing the developments.

To facilitate smooth maritime operations, the government is coordinating closely with ports, shipping lines, and logistics stakeholders to minimize any operational disturbances to maritime trade. Ports have been directed to implement relief measures as necessary, including concessions in anchorage, berth hire, and storage fees.

Major ports are prioritizing the arrival of LPG vessels to guarantee the prompt unloading of cargo and the continuity of energy supply. In recent days, six LPG vessels have arrived at major Indian ports. Additionally, ports are providing safe anchorage for vessels loaded with cargo destined for the Gulf region, which are temporarily unable to proceed due to current conditions.

The ministry continues to monitor the maritime situation in close collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions abroad, shipping firms, and other maritime stakeholders, focusing on ensuring the welfare of Indian seafarers and the resilience of India’s maritime logistics framework.
