Actor Abhay Deol has joined a growing chorus of Bollywood voices reacting to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj's viral challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the chanting of all stanzas of 'Vande Mataram'. The reaction came on 30 September 2026, days after actor Hrithik Roshan had also weighed in on the same post.

What Bansuri Swaraj Said

The controversy originates from a reel shared by Ruchira Chaturvedi, national convenor of Social Media and Digital Communications for the Indian National Congress (INC), in which BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj issued a pointed challenge to Rahul Gandhi. Swaraj said, 'I'm issuing a challenge to you today. You want to smash the patriarchy — fair enough. I am perfectly comfortable singing Christmas carols, singing Vande Mataram in its entirety, and reciting the Shiv Tandav. So, I challenge you: if you truly want to smash the patriarchy, then go ahead and sing the full version of Vande Mataram.'

The challenge was a direct response to Gandhi's remarks at his 'Chhatron ki Goonj' event in August, where he urged women to 'smash the patriarchy' and criticised what he described as the 'Manusmriti mindset'.

What Rahul Gandhi Had Said

At the event, Gandhi had stated, 'What is the mindset? That a girl has a place; she should be locked in a cage, she should be controlled, she should not work, and boys should get full freedom... if they want to abuse, they can abuse; if they want to work, they can work... We do not want such Hindustan. Together we have to finish this patriarchy — smash the patriarchy! And my message to you, simple message: Be loud, be proud, and fight for your space in society.'

Gandhi's remarks sparked a sharp political counter-offensive from the BJP, with Swaraj's Vande Mataram challenge being among the most widely circulated responses.

Abhay Deol left three 'rolling on the floor laughing' emojis in the comment section of the post — a wordless but unambiguous reaction that resonated widely.
