Mumbai, Aug 18 (NationPress) Actor Arvind Swamy reflected on the remarkable success of the 1992 romantic thriller Roja, stating that he was not in India during its debut and missed witnessing its overwhelming acclaim, as he was abroad pursuing his master's degree.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Roja stars Arvind and Madhoo, telling the story of a young woman from Tamil Nadu who desperately searches for her husband, kidnapped by militants during a covert operation in Jammu and Kashmir.
In his conversation with IANS, Arvind remarked, “It was one of the few films to achieve national recognition, as it was dubbed into multiple languages.”
“Interestingly, I wasn’t in India for the film’s release; I was abroad completing my master's. After filming, I left, so I missed out on witnessing its success. However, it’s incredibly nostalgic to see the scenes from Roja,” he added.
Throughout his career, Arvind has consistently chosen unconventional roles, evident in films like Bombay, Thalapathi, Minsara Kanavu, Thani Oruvan, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, Thalaivi, Meiyazhagan, Daddy Mounam, and Devaraagam, among others.
When asked if his choices are intentional, he responded, “No, I don’t follow trends; I pursue films that resonate with me, avoiding decisions based solely on commercial viability.”
“If presented with a challenge, I need to question whether I can execute it as I envision. That motivates me. If it’s simple, I’m not interested,” he concluded.
The 55-year-old star, who made his directorial debut with the Netflix anthology series Navarasa in 2021, received the Leadership in Cinema award at the 16th IFFM 2025, sharing what the recognition signifies to him.
Arvind stated, “Firstly, it’s an honor. Thank you very much. I’m still on a journey to learn and excel in my craft.”
He further expressed, “Over the years, I have prioritized choices not based on commercial success but on compelling stories, great collaborators, and perhaps inspiring others through my work. That’s how I find meaning in this award.”
