Debut feature film director Ela Shanmughasundaram has revealed that his upcoming Tamil thriller 'Beep' is a high-concept crime drama designed to fuse rationalism with psychological fantasy — a genre blend that he describes as rare in mainstream Indian cinema. The film, produced by M Quest Movies, stars Raghav Ranganathan and Prerna Khanna in the lead roles and is set for a worldwide theatrical release in September 2025.

What Makes 'Beep' Different

Speaking about the film's core premise, Shanmughasundaram said, 'Beep marks my debut as a feature film director. It is a high-concept crime drama that seamlessly blends rationalism with psychological fantasy. Cinematic thrillers often rely heavily on weapons like knives and guns, but in this story, the human intellect is the sharpest weapon of all.'

He added that with high-concept films being a rarity — 'often just a handful each year' — the team has deliberately crafted the narrative to engage mainstream audiences rather than remain niche.

The Protagonist's Unique Ability

The film's central USP revolves around an extraordinary skill possessed by its male lead. 'A single photograph holds a treasure trove of hidden details,' the director explained. 'The protagonist of our film possesses an extraordinary ability to decipher not just a woman's emotional state through a photograph, but also unravel the intricate web behind a complex crime. Call it intuitive brilliance or sharp analytical deduction — there is a compelling underlying reason for his ability, and that forms the core USP of Beep.'

Plot and Ensemble Cast

The story centres on a close-knit group of six friends. When one of them dies under mysterious circumstances, the survivors set out to uncover the truth. Shanmughasundaram stressed that the narrative is not protagonist-driven alone: 'Every character, including the leading lady, plays an integral role in driving the narrative.'

Beyond the two leads, the film features Yamini, Priyadharshini (known for Sarpatta Parambarai), and Nitish Veera in pivotal roles, giving the ensemble considerable depth.

Technical Team Behind the Film

On the craft side, 'Beep' brings together a cross-industry technical crew. Music is composed by Prashanth Vihari, the acclaimed Telugu composer best known for scoring The Girlfriend starring Rashmika Mandanna. Cinematography is handled by Pradeep Padmakumar, who has extensive credits in Kannada cinema and Bollywood. Editing is a collaboration between Abhishek from the Malayalam film industry and Vignesh, a former associate of editor Don Bosco. Action sequences have been choreographed by Ramkumar, who recently worked on director Mysskin's Train, featuring Vijay Sethupathi.

Release and Current Status

With production fully wrapped, Beep is currently undergoing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) process. A worldwide theatrical release is scheduled for September 2025. The film represents a significant cross-industry collaboration, drawing talent from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema under a single production.
