Mumbai, April 17 (NationPress) The forthcoming series ‘Secrets of the Penguins’ will explore the intriguing realm of penguins and their behaviors. This three-part series features narration by Blake Lively and is produced by acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron, alongside National Geographic Explorer-at-Large.
Emmy and BAFTA winners Ruth Roberts and Martin Williams from Talesmith also contribute as executive producers for the show.
This series marks a groundbreaking achievement as it captures penguin behaviors on film for the first time. The Talesmith team, led by wildlife filmmaker Bertie, along with over 70 distinguished scientists and filmmakers, embarked on a two-year expedition across the globe, from the rocky shores of Cape Town and the frigid coastlines of South Georgia Island to the tropical Galapagos and the desert caves of Namibia, to document the lives of penguins. A dedicated crew of three undertook a daring 274-day filming journey on the Ekstrom Ice Shelf in Antarctica, home to a colony of 20,000 emperor penguins.
Confronting some of the planet's most extreme conditions, they documented unprecedented moments, such as a bonded pair of emperors practicing egg transfers using a snowball to perfect their skills for the real thing, resilient chicks maneuvering through brash ice amid climate change, and young penguins cleverly using their beaks to elevate themselves from crevasses.
The series introduces the rare “rockaroni” chicks, a hybrid of rockhopper and macaroni penguins, providing an enthralling look at potential evolution and adaptation. Additional extraordinary scenes include a courageous rockhopper defending itself against a southern sea lion, first-ever footage of a concealed cave colony of African penguins, and intelligent Galapagos penguins orchestrating a daring heist: stealing fish straight from pelican beaks while skillfully herding sardine bait balls.
The series also leverages the knowledge of scientists and conservationists, including National Geographic Explorer and marine biologist Dr. Pablo Borboroglu, conservation biologist Dr. Michelle LaRue, African penguin expert Dr. Andrea Thiebault, veterinary specialist Dr. Gustavo Jiménez Uzcategui, penguin expert Dr. Jessica Kemper, and marine biologist Dr. Katta Ludynia.
The series is scheduled to premiere on April 22 on National Geographic, with all episodes available for streaming on JioHotstar.
