Celebrating 20 Years of ‘Swades’: Ashutosh Gowariker Reflects on the Film’s Exploration of Identity

Mumbai, Dec 17 (NationPress) Filmmaker-actor Ashutosh Gowariker, who is commemorating two decades of his direction with ‘Swades’, expressed that the film originated from his aspiration to investigate the complexities of identity, belonging, and social responsibility.
The film starred Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan in the pivotal role of a NASA scientist. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, an Oscar and Grammy winner, with lyrics provided by Javed Akhtar.
Ashutosh Gowariker stated, "Two decades ago, we began our voyage with 'Swades,' a film stemming from a profound wish to examine the intricacies of identity, belonging, and social responsibility. Witnessing how 'Swades' still resonates with audiences today, and observing its lasting influence on their lives, is genuinely humbling. It is widely recognized as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s most remarkable performances, depicting the journey of an NRI who returns to India to reconnect with his heritage and make a positive impact in his homeland.
