Is Dhanush Set to Celebrate Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's Legacy in a Biopic?

Mumbai, May 21 (NationPress) The life of one of India’s most cherished Presidents, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, is being brought to the big screen in an upcoming biopic. Titled ‘Kalam’, the film features National Award-winning actor Dhanush and has officially entered production.

From the humble beginnings in Rameswaram to the esteemed Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dr. Kalam's journey was a remarkable fusion of rocket science and an indomitable spirit. Known as the ‘Missile Man of India’, he transformed his modest origins into a celebrated career as an aerospace scientist, visionary, and the People’s President. His enduring legacy, portrayed in his renowned memoir ‘Wings of Fire’, continues to inspire minds across generations.

Dhanush will portray the role of Dr. Kalam in this film, which is directed by Om Raut, noted for his previous work on ‘Adipurush’.

In a statement, Raut remarked, “In a time lacking genuine statesmen, Kalam transcended politics and mediocrity. He was a champion of education, excellence, and indigenous innovation. Telling his story on screen is both an artistic challenge and a moral obligation. This narrative is motivational for the global youth, especially in the Global South. The film aims to delve into the man behind India's missile programs and presidency—a poet, teacher, and dreamer whose words embodied both science and spirituality. It goes beyond mere political biography, offering insights into leadership and nation-building.

Producer Bhushan Kumar stated, “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam's journey continues to motivate countless individuals. At T-Series, we are privileged to contribute to a film that honors such an extraordinary Indian. This collaboration with Om Raut is our third, and we are thrilled to partner with Dhanush and Abhishek Agarwal to create something truly special. This is more than a film; it’s a tribute to a man who demonstrated how dreams, dedication, and humility can shape a nation’s future.”

Dr. Kalam, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, was a key figure in the Indian space initiative, succeeding Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space program. He played a crucial role in India’s civilian space program and military missile development while working with both the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

He is credited with developing the Agni 1 missile, a crucial component of India's arsenal, especially after the nation’s initial reliance on the BrahMos missile. The latter was recently utilized in Operation Sindoor—India’s counter-terrorism operation against Pakistan.

While the BrahMos missile is a joint military project between India’s DRDO and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya, the Agni 1 is an indigenous achievement.

The Agni 1 is a nuclear-capable, solid-fuel missile designed to serve as a strategic weapon and deterrent. It boasts a range of 700-1200 km and can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg, including both conventional and nuclear warheads. This single-stage missile can be launched from rail-based or road-mobile platforms.

Dr. Kalam’s contributions have led to advancements like the Agni 5, recently tested by India. The Agni 5 is an MIRV missile with intercontinental capabilities, boasting a range of 5000 km. This three-stage missile is powered by solid fuel and can carry up to 10 nuclear warheads simultaneously, with the entire China within its striking range.

He also held the position of India’s 11th President and served as the Prime Minister’s Chief Scientific Adviser from July 1992 to December 1999, establishing himself as a national icon.

The film is produced by Abhishek Agarwal under Abhishek Agarwal Arts, along with Bhushan Kumar under T-Series, Krishan Kumar, and Anil Sunkara.
