Mumbai, March 21 (NationPress) In an open discussion, actress Divya Dutta addressed the persistent gender imbalance in the entertainment sector. She emphasized that although some advancements have been made, the industry continues to be male-dominated, and achieving genuine equality is still a distant goal.

When queried about the portrayal of women in historical cinema, Divya reflected on the hurdles faced by female roles in period pieces. She recognized that while there are noteworthy female characters, the environment remains predominantly male-focused, and significant efforts are needed to secure equal representation and depth for women in these narratives.

In her conversation with IANS, she remarked, “That truly depends on the story being told. If we consider the industry as a whole, then yes, it is still a male-centric realm, but we are progressing towards greater equality. Nonetheless, there’s still much work to be done. When it comes to historical narratives, it’s contingent on the storyline. For instance, if you're depicting someone like Rani Lakshmi Bai, she takes center stage. Likewise, if the tale revolves around Indira Gandhi, she too is the lead character. It shifts based on whose narrative is being presented. If it’s about Maharaj Sambhaji, then the focus would be on him.”

Discussing her recent project, Chhaava, the Veer Zara actress shared, “When they approached me for the role of Rajmata Sohra Bai, it was thoroughly researched. I still possess all the sketches and narratives that were crafted for me. With such detailed preparation, it’s essential to approach the character sincerely and connect with her as the creators envisioned. The sets, costumes, and dialogues were executed beautifully, and our director was exceptional. The entire experience was immersive, and I truly felt part of that era. It was my inaugural experience working on a historical project like this, and it was indeed a remarkable journey.”

On her future endeavors, Divya disclosed, “Looking ahead, I have a film in the pipeline featuring Manoj Bajpayee and Jimmy Shergill, along with a biopic starring Neeraj Kavi. I am also participating in a web series and two English films.”
