Engineering Student Seeks to Overturn Censor Certificate for Tamil Film 'Amaran' in Madras HC

Chennai, Dec 5 (NationPress) An engineering student hailing from Chennai, V.V. Vaageesan, has approached the Madras High Court with a writ petition aiming to annul the Censor Board's certification for the Tamil film 'Amaran'.
The petitioner took this legal step after his personal mobile phone number was featured in a scene of the film, causing him considerable distress.
As per Vaageesan's claims, he started receiving an overwhelming number of calls following the movie's theatrical release on October 31, 2024.
The callers mistakenly believed that the number was associated either with the actress Sai Pallavi, who stars as the female lead, or with her character, Indhu Rebecca Varghese.
Previously, Vaageesan had sent a legal notice to Raajkamal Films International, the production company founded by the renowned actor Kamal Haasan.
The production house later expressed regret for the error and obscured the phone number prior to the film's availability on Netflix on December 5, 2024.
Nonetheless, Vaageesan proceeded with the writ petition, requesting an interim injunction to halt further releases of the film on OTT platforms until the matter is settled.
Moreover, he is demanding compensation amounting to Rs 1.1 crore from the film’s producer and director.
Additionally, the petitioner has asked the court to instruct Bharti Airtel Limited to provide the incoming call records for his number from October 31, 2024.
'Amaran', a biopic depicting the life of the late Army officer Major Mukund Varadarajan, portrays the love story between Major Mukund and his wife, Indhu Rebecca Varghese.
In one notable scene, the female lead, played by Sai Pallavi, discloses a 10-digit phone number to the main character, which coincidentally matches Vaageesan’s personal number.
The writ petition is anticipated to be scheduled for a hearing before Justice S. Sounthar on Friday, December 6, 2024.
