How Can Independent Cinema in India Be Enhanced, As Shared by Prakash Jha?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 22 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Prakash Jha, who is gearing up for his participation in the London Film Festival, has expressed his thoughts on how to enhance the landscape for independent cinema in India.
In an interview with IANS during the festival's promotional activities, he stated, “Ultimately, we must consider both perspectives. Regarding exhibition options, multiplexes provide greater bandwidth. The issue lies in the film release process within these multiplexes, where the distribution costs remain the same regardless of whether a film's budget is INR 500 crore or INR 5 crore. This calls for a more pragmatic approach. As a multiplex owner myself, I advocate for independent films to be showcased during prime time at reduced costs.”
He continued by noting that in the past, before the emergence of multiplexes, independent films could still find distributors. Although this niche market has become more competitive, those distributors were keen to promote independent films at various levels. However, with the rising costs of advertising, the landscape has transformed from local to a more global and national focus.
“The expenses associated with producing digital content have surged, necessitating practical thinking. Independent cinema serves as a vital medium for societal dialogue; thus, we should dedicate more time to crafting films we believe in. However, there must be distribution channels available,” he added.
“Even on OTT platforms, it is typically the run-of-the-mill commercial films that receive the spotlight. There should be dedicated platforms for independent films, or mainstream platforms should engage with independent filmmakers to acquire their works, even at lower costs. It's crucial for independent filmmakers to have access to exhibition opportunities to enable them to create their next project,” he concluded.
