Prakash Jha Discusses the Challenges of Small Films in Today's Theatrical Market
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 12 (NationPress) National Award-winning director Prakash Jha has addressed the challenge that smaller films face against blockbuster releases regarding screen allocation.
In an interview with IANS at his office in Andheri West, Mumbai, Jha, who also operates a multiplex in Jamshedpur, shared his perspective on the current state of India's theatrical landscape.
He emphasized that there exists ample room for all types of films, each with its unique audience. Many filmmakers choose to bypass theatrical releases in favor of OTT platforms due to the financial implications tied to traditional cinema. The costs associated with putting a smaller budget film into circulation can quickly escalate, eroding potential profits.
Jha remarked, “Numerous small-budget films find their way into theatres. Just from my multiplex in Jamshedpur, it’s astonishing to see 12 films screening simultaneously, often with multiple shows and in various language versions. There is certainly a viable opportunity for films to make it to theatres today. Some producers opt out of theatrical distribution due to the associated expenses for venue hire, marketing, and the necessary technology, but the chances for success are improving.”
“As filmmakers, we must consider the types of stories we want to tell and how to effectively reach our audiences. Engagement is key; if a film resonates with viewers, its vulnerability and authenticity can translate into success,” he added.
