Mumbai, April 26 (NationPress) Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, renowned for his works like Jigarthanda and Pizza, has shared his insights on the theme of love in his upcoming film Retro featuring Suriya.

“People often associate me with crime, thrillers, and dark comedies,” the director remarked.

He continued: “However, Retro is fundamentally a love story. That’s the core of it.”

Set against the backdrop of the 1990s, infused with nostalgia, style, and action, Retro may visually resemble a classic gangster movie, but for Subbaraj, it serves a more profound purpose.

“Even in my previous films, there has always been a personal, often emotional essence. But this time, I wanted romance to be the focal point. It’s not merely about love between a man and a woman; it’s about love as a transformative force that propels the character towards growth.”

Regarding Suriya’s character, he portrays a once-dreaded gangster attempting to leave behind his violent past, only to confront an emotional awakening upon falling in love.

“This isn’t your typical redemption story,” Karthik explained.

He added: “It’s about a man who has never experienced peace until he meets someone who makes him believe it’s achievable. The conflict between his former self and his aspirations is where the romance thrives.”

The director acknowledged that centering on romance presented its own set of challenges.

“Creating visually appealing action is straightforward. However, making love resonate as genuine, especially in such a context — that’s where the challenge lies. You must earn it.”

Discussing Suriya and Pooja Hegde, he noted: “Their chemistry, their silences, the way they gaze at one another… It’s all about subtle nuances, glances, and restraint.”

“Ultimately, style may capture your attention, but it’s emotion that lingers. And in Retro, that emotion is love.”

Retro, a romantic action film, has been filmed in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ooty, Kerala, and Chennai. Retro is slated for global release on May 1.
