Did Kasthuri Call Out Chinmayi for Her Comments on a Kerala Bus Incident?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 21 (NationPress) Actress Kasthuri Shankar was among numerous individuals expressing outrage after feminist and singer Chinmayi tweeted a message that seemed to take a covert jab at a man who tragically took his own life in Kerala following false allegations of harassment on a bus.
On Tuesday, Chinmayi referenced a tweet from another user regarding a man's arrest in Dehradun for flashing at a woman, stating, "Now if this man ends his life, it is the fault of the woman for merely walking by."
Though Chinmayi did not explicitly mention the incident involving the Kerala bus or the victim, Deepak, responses indicated that she intended to draw a parallel between the Dehradun case and the bus incident in Kerala.
Her implicit defense of the woman who shared the video leading to the victim's death was criticized by many, including Kasthuri, who remarked, "This callous post has left me both saddened and furious. What an absurd comparison. You don't even spare a man after his demise? It’s troubling if one sees no men, only demons, and no women, only victims."
Other users urged Chinmayi to thoroughly examine the Kerala case before commenting. One user stated, "This girl @Chinmayi is complete nonsense; please understand the recent situation in Kerala before speaking up. Don't inject that toxic feminist perspective into this!"
Another user added, "This is gaslighting 101. You cannot equate a perpetrator with someone who was victimized and defamed. Society may trust women more than men, but we must recognize that some women exploit this trust for personal gain. We should refrain from hasty conclusions, as this can affect innocent men in our lives."
For those unaware, Deepak, a resident of Govindapuram in Kozhikode, Kerala, committed suicide after a young woman, identified as Shimjitha Musthafa from Vadakara, posted a video accusing him of sexual harassment during a bus ride.
The footage went viral, leading to severe public shaming.
His family and friends report that Deepak was left devastated after the video circulated widely.
Former Goa Governor and senior advocate P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, who visited Deepak's family, pointed out serious procedural flaws in handling the case.
He questioned why the police initially categorized the incident as merely an “unnatural death” despite the clear connection between the viral video and the suicide.
“Even a child can comprehend that this is a case of abetment to suicide, a crime that can result in up to ten years of imprisonment,” he stated, alleging that key details were overlooked during the inquiry.
Subsequently, police filed a new FIR based on a complaint from Deepak's mother, charging the individuals involved with abetment to suicide.
