Nidhi Shah, who rose to prominence as Kinjal in the television juggernaut Anupamaa, is stepping into the digital streaming space with the upcoming series Vedha. The actress described her new character as deeply layered and ambitious, marking a deliberate departure from her television persona and a personal challenge to expand her range as a performer.

Vedha, according to Shah, is a character driven by power and survival instincts, yet grounded in her own identity. "Vedha is deeply driven and ambitious. She exists in this world where power and survival matter a lot. What makes her interesting is how she navigates all of it while holding on to her own identity," Shah said in an interview.

Transition from television to OTT

For Shah, the move from the fast-paced television ecosystem to digital storytelling has been both exhilarating and demanding. "It's my first step into the digital space, so there was a sense of excitement. At the same time, the style of acting and storytelling is quite different from television. I really enjoyed exploring something new and pushing myself out of my comfort zone," she explained.

Key differences in medium and craft

Television production operates on compressed timelines with rapid shooting schedules, whereas OTT platforms allow actors greater time to refine nuance and detail. "The storytelling is more subtle and realistic, which I really enjoyed," Shah noted. This shift in pacing and narrative depth has influenced her approach to the character, allowing her to explore psychological dimensions less accessible in the television format.

Shah acknowledged the affection audiences have shown for her Anupamaa role while emphasizing her eagerness to showcase a different facet of her craft. "People have loved me as Kinjal, and I'm very grateful for that. But Vedha is completely different, and that's exactly what attracted me. She's strong, layered, and has a very different journey. As an actor, I wanted to explore a new side of myself," she said.

Anupamaa, adapted from Star Jalsha's Bengali series Sreemoyee, stands as one of Indian television's longest-running soap operas. Rupali Ganguly anchors the ensemble as the titular character, with the cast having evolved since its inception.
