Nirahua defends Bhojpuri cinema against vulgar content, objectification claims
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhojpuri superstar and actor-politician Dinesh Lal Yadav, popularly known as Nirahua, has pushed back against the long-standing criticism that Bhojpuri cinema objectifies women and promotes vulgar content, arguing that singling out an entire industry based on a fraction of its output is fundamentally unfair. The actor made these remarks in Mumbai on 18 July.
Every Industry Produces Mixed Content, Says Nirahua
Nirahua contended that no film industry — regional or national — is immune to producing content of varying quality, and Bhojpuri cinema deserves to be judged by the full breadth of its output rather than its most controversial titles.
'I feel that in every industry, every kind of cinema is made, every kind of content is made. Just like there's Bollywood, South Indian cinema, Bhojpuri cinema and Marathi cinema, every industry caters to every section of the audience,' he said.
He added that the negative perception is largely a product of selective amplification. 'But when we highlight the work of just one particular section, it starts feeling like that's the only kind of work happening there. That isn't true. Good work and bad work happen everywhere,' Nirahua said.
The Selective Spotlight Problem
The actor argued that the controversy around Bhojpuri content is as much a media framing issue as it is an industry one. When only a specific category of films receives attention — whether for shock value or criticism — audiences naturally begin to associate that category with the industry as a whole.
Nirahua invoked a Hindi proverb to make his point: 'Lakh aur burai sab mein hoti hai. Koi bhi insaan kami se pare nahi hota. Jahan gulaab mein kaante na hon, aisa baag dikha dijiye.' He translated the sentiment plainly — flaws exist everywhere, and no person or institution is beyond imperfection. 'It's only because certain things get highlighted that people begin to believe that's all there is,' he said.
This is not the first time the Bhojpuri industry has faced such scrutiny. Critics and women's rights groups have periodically flagged song lyrics and promotional material from certain Bhojpuri productions as demeaning, a debate that has intensified with the rise of social media sharing of film songs.
Nirahua's Career and Recent Work
One of the biggest names in Bhojpuri cinema, Nirahua has headlined a string of commercially successful films including 'Nirahua Rickshawala', 'Nirahua Hindustani', 'Patna Se Pakistan', 'Border', 'Sipahi', 'Jigarwala', and 'Nirahua Chalal London'. His on-screen pairings with actress Amrapali Dubey have been particularly popular with audiences.
Beyond Bhojpuri films, Nirahua has expanded into Hindi entertainment. He was recently seen in the OTT series 'Gram Chikitsalaya' Season 2, which earned positive reviews from both audiences and critics. The show also starred Amol Parashar, Vinay Pathak, and Akanksha Ranjan.
The Broader Debate
The criticism of Bhojpuri cinema is part of a wider conversation in India about the responsibilities of regional entertainment industries toward their audiences, particularly women. Nirahua's defence reflects a position held by many industry insiders — that bad actors should not define an entire ecosystem — but critics argue that the industry's own self-regulation mechanisms remain weak. How Bhojpuri cinema navigates this reputational challenge, especially as OTT platforms expand its reach, will be closely watched.
