Pankaj Tripathi launches handloom venture after years of on-set travel
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
National Award-winning actor Pankaj Tripathi has announced the launch of a handloom venture aimed at promoting India's handloom traditions, empowering local artisans, and encouraging consumers to choose homegrown textiles. The initiative, conceptualised in collaboration with stylist Vineet Chauhan, draws directly from Tripathi's years of travelling across the country for film shoots.
How the Journey Began
Tripathi credits his on-location experiences for kindling a deep appreciation of handloom weaving. 'Over the years, while traveling for shoots across the country, I have had the privilege of witnessing the beauty and dedication that goes into handloom weaving,' he said. He recalled visiting Chanderi, where he observed women in nearly every household weaving sarees and fabrics on handlooms. 'It fascinated me because this wasn't just a livelihood — it was a way of life, a tradition passed down through generations,' he added.
Banaras and the Magic of the Handloom
The actor also described his visits to the weavers' neighbourhoods of Banaras, where he would spend time watching artisans produce intricate fabrics entirely by hand. 'In a world dominated by machines and mass production, I found myself asking, do people still make clothes by hand?' he said. For Tripathi, the answer — and the reality — was humbling. 'And perhaps nowhere in the world is this tradition alive and diverse as it is in India,' he noted.
More Than Fabric: Culture, Identity, and Craft
Tripathi is emphatic that handloom is far more than a textile category. 'It is about stories, communities, culture, patience, and human skill. Every weave carries the identity of a region, every motif carries history, and every garment carries the hard work of an artisan,' he said. He acknowledged that despite preserving traditions of immense cultural value, many weaving communities continue to face economic hardship. 'I felt that if I could contribute in any way towards creating awareness and generating opportunities for these artisans, I should do so,' he said.
The Venture: A Platform for Artisans
The handloom venture, developed through what Tripathi describes as 'countless conversations' with Vineet Chauhan, aims to showcase handloom products while narrating the stories of the communities behind them. 'Together, we envisioned a platform that would not only showcase beautiful handloom products but also tell the stories behind them. Our dream is to collaborate with artisan communities from different parts of India and bring their extraordinary work to a wider audience,' Tripathi said. His long-standing association with khadi and handloom products, he noted, reinforced his commitment to the cause. 'India's handloom tradition is thousands of years old. It is one of our greatest cultural treasures,' he added.
What's Next
Further details on the venture's product range and artisan partnerships are yet to be announced. The initiative arrives at a time when Indian handloom is seeking renewed mainstream visibility, with several celebrities and designers increasingly championing indigenous textiles on national and international platforms.
