Los Angeles, Dec 28 (NationPress) The wait for vengeance has extended as film enthusiasts will have to hold on a bit longer to revisit Gotham City.
Matt Reeves’ sequel to 'The Batman' has been postponed to 2027, as reported by 'Variety'.
The superhero sequel was initially scheduled for release on October 2, 2026, but has now been moved back to October 1, 2027, in Imax, as announced by Warner Bros. on Friday.
According to 'Variety', this change has opened up a slot for Alejandro G. Inarritu and Tom Cruise’s upcoming film to debut in 2026, coinciding with the start of the awards season. This untitled film will now hit theaters in Imax on October 2, the same date 'The Batman 2' vacated.
Warner Bros. has also made further adjustments to its release schedule, swapping the launch dates of Bong Joon Ho’s 'Mickey 17' and Ryan Coogler’s 'Sinners'. 'Mickey 17', which features Robert Pattinson (the actor behind the Dark Knight in Reeves’ series), is now set to open on March 7, 2025, while 'Sinners' will be pushed back to April 18, 2025.
This new date for 'Mickey 17' allows Bong’s film to screen longer in Imax, as per sources from the studio.
The film with Cruise and Inarritu remains largely under wraps, but according to the official logline released by Warner Bros., it follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he “embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything”. The star-studded cast includes Sandra Huller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Riz Ahmed. Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind 'Dune', is producing this movie.
This represents a shift in direction for Cruise, who has been preoccupied with saving the world in more traditional action films like 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Top Gun: Maverick'. Inarritu is a two-time Oscar winner known for his work on 'Birdman' and 'The Revenant'. Their collaboration appears to be reminiscent of Cruise’s earlier career, during which he worked with renowned directors like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, and Paul Thomas Anderson.
