Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, 5 June inaugurated NAMO Hospital in Daman, dedicating the facility to the nation as part of a sweeping development push across the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The inauguration forms part of a broader package of projects worth approximately ₹1,340 crore launched during the Prime Minister's visit to the region.

What NAMO Hospital Offers

The newly inaugurated hospital is designed to strengthen access to specialised medical care for residents of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, while also serving patients from neighbouring districts in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Officials have described the facility as a key node in a larger medical ecosystem being built across the Union Territory, encompassing teaching, research, and advanced treatment capabilities.

According to official statements, the hospital is expected to significantly reduce the need for patients to travel long distances to access specialised care — a persistent challenge for families across the region who have historically had to rely on urban centres in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Part of a Wider NAMO Healthcare Network

The Daman hospital builds on earlier phases of the NAMO healthcare initiative. In 2025, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the NAMO Hospital and Research Centre in Silvassa as part of the same broader healthcare expansion programme. Authorities have indicated that plans for the network include substantial expansion of bed capacity and advanced medical infrastructure to meet the region's long-term healthcare needs.

Notably, this is the latest in a series of health infrastructure investments the Centre has directed toward smaller states and Union Territories, where specialised medical access has historically lagged behind larger metros.

₹1,340 Crore Development Package for Daman

Healthcare was not the only sector addressed during the Prime Minister's visit. According to information released ahead of the programme, projects worth around ₹1,340 crore inaugurated in Daman included both NAMO Hospital and the new terminal building at NAMO Airport. The package spans healthcare, connectivity, tourism, and public infrastructure — signalling a concerted effort to upgrade the Union Territory's development profile.

Significance for the Region

The inauguration comes at a time when the government is scaling up investment in public healthcare infrastructure across smaller administrative units. For Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli — merged into a single Union Territory in 2020 — the addition of a hospital with specialised and research capabilities marks a qualitative shift in local health delivery.
