Punjab Enhances Healthcare Access with 19,000 ASHA Workers
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, April 1 (NationPress) To bolster healthcare accessibility at the grassroots level, the Punjab government has mobilized the network of ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activity) workers, aiming to expedite registrations for the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna (MMSY). With more than 19,000 ASHA workers and 900 facilitators actively facilitating enrolments across various villages in the state, an official announcement confirmed on Wednesday.
The role of ASHA workers is pivotal in extending the reach of this health initiative at the community level. Each worker is responsible for a group of approximately 1,000 individuals, covering around 250 households. They conduct door-to-door campaigns to disseminate information about the scheme and assist families with the enrolment process at Seva Kendras and Common Service Centres.
This strategy guarantees direct engagement with households, particularly in rural regions, while guiding families through the enrolment process, which helps to ensure that registration and verification occur without any delays or confusion.
The results of this sustained outreach are already evident, with ASHA-led initiatives contributing to nearly 10 lakh enrolments in just the past 20 days, significantly accelerating the inclusion of Punjab residents under health coverage.
To maintain this momentum, the ASHA-led framework is underpinned by a structured incentive system, rewarding workers for successful enrolments, which promotes accountability and consistent outreach across various regions.
Highlighting the purpose of this initiative, Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh stated: "Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has made it clear that in Punjab, no family should endure hardship due to inability to afford treatment. Our ASHA workers are bringing this commitment to the doorsteps of the people, ensuring that every family is informed and able to enrol. This is not merely a scheme; it is a promise we are fulfilling directly to the community, one household at a time."
The scope of the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna is continually expanding across Punjab, with nearly 50,000 residents enrolling each day and upwards of 35 lakh Sehat Cards already distributed. Districts including Ludhiana, Patiala, and Jalandhar are leading in registrations, showcasing robust participation from both urban and rural populations.
In addition to enrolments, the scheme is yielding tangible healthcare outcomes. To date, over two lakh treatments valued at Rs 300 crore have been successfully administered, encompassing more than 40,000 surgical procedures in areas such as cardiac care, dialysis, orthopaedics, cancer treatment, and emergency interventions. This is supported by a substantial Rs 2,000 crore allocation in the Punjab Budget for 2026-27 to further enhance the scheme's outreach.
With health camps, service centres, and door-to-door engagement working in unison, the government is actively encouraging residents to enrol for their Sehat Card and take advantage of cashless treatment benefits under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna.
