Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday, 14 May called on the global community — and BRICS member states in particular — to explicitly condemn what he described as 'violations of international law' by the United States and Israel, and to take concrete steps against 'warmongering' at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in New Delhi. His remarks marked one of the sharpest diplomatic broadsides delivered from Indian soil in recent memory.

Key Accusations at the BRICS Forum

Addressing fellow foreign ministers, Araghchi alleged that Iran has been subjected to 'brutal and unlawful aggression' by the US and Israel. He directly challenged the justifications offered for those actions, stating: 'The attacks on my people have been justified with false claims that run counter to the informed assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency and even America's own intelligence community.'

He argued that Iran's experience is not unique: 'The truth is that Iran — like many other independent nations — is the victim of illegal expansionism and warmongering. These are ugly things which have no place in today's world.'

Warning on Regional Instability

Araghchi broadened his argument beyond Iran's immediate situation, warning that regional instability carries costs for all parties — including those initiating conflict. 'Those who pursue reckless adventures may believe it furthers their geopolitical interests. But as consumers and governments around the world now sense and understand, regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides — including the aggressors,' he said.

The remarks came amid an already volatile West Asian security environment, with tensions between Iran and both the US and Israel having escalated sharply in recent months.

Iran's Defiance and Diplomatic Posture

Araghchi struck a dual tone — defiant on sovereignty, open on diplomacy. He asserted that Iran is 'unbreakable and emerges stronger and more united under pressure,' and expressed readiness to defend Iranian soil while simultaneously pursuing diplomatic channels. He underscored that Iran 'will not bow to any pressure or threat' but remains willing to engage with those who speak the 'language of respect.'

Iran's Call to BRICS

The Iranian foreign minister issued a direct three-part call to action for BRICS member states and the broader international community: explicitly condemn US and Israeli actions including what he termed 'illegal aggression against Iran'; prevent the politicisation of international institutions; and take concrete steps to end the impunity of those who violate the UN Charter.

Araghchi framed BRICS as a potential counterweight to the existing global order, stating that the grouping 'can and must' become one of the principal pillars of a 'just, balanced and humane global order.' The BRICS foreign ministers' gathering in New Delhi is being closely watched as a barometer of how the grouping — which now includes Iran as a member — positions itself on major geopolitical fault lines.
