His family has alleged that leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were involved in the assault — an allegation that has not been independently verified.

The victim's family further alleged that Rana was denied assistance while critically injured, and that his wife was assaulted as she attempted to shield him.
