EU Raises Concerns Over Bangladesh's Boeing Aircraft Purchase from the US
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) The choice of Bangladesh to acquire 14 aircraft from Boeing instead of Airbus from Europe has raised alarms within the European Union, as the bloc is advocating for a more equitable trade relationship with the South Asian country, as reported by local sources.
This situation emerged following the interim government's establishment of a reciprocal tariff agreement with the United States in February, wherein Bangladesh committed to boosting its purchases of American civilian aircraft and associated services, as detailed by The Financial Express.
The arrangement indicates that Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national carrier, plans to buy 14 Boeing aircraft, with the potential for additional acquisitions.
This proposed transaction, pending the completion of all legal requirements in both nations, aims to mitigate the trade deficit between Bangladesh and the United States, according to the report.
However, this shift has caused disappointment in the European Union, which anticipated that Bangladesh would follow through on earlier agreements to procure aircraft from Airbus.
During French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Dhaka in September 2023, Bangladesh had reportedly pledged to buy 10 Airbus aircraft, including A350 wide-body jets, but this order has yet to be finalized.
Currently, Biman Bangladesh Airlines operates an exclusively Boeing fleet, with no Airbus aircraft delivered to date.
A senior official from the commerce ministry informed The Financial Express that the European Union remains the largest destination for Bangladeshi exports, exceeding €20 billion, while exports to the United States are under $9 billion.
Sources revealed that the EU has expressed its concerns in a recent communication to Bangladesh’s commerce ministry, emphasizing the bloc's significant role in Bangladeshi exports.
Moreover, Bangladeshi products benefit from duty-free access to the EU market, whereas exports to the United States face relatively higher tariffs, they noted.
In light of this, the EU has called for a "level playing field" akin to that provided to the United States in their trade arrangements.
Officials indicated that this situation could impact Bangladesh’s pursuit of GSP Plus trade status with the European Union, which would enhance preferential market access for Bangladeshi exports.
