Eruption of Mount Semeru in East Java, Indonesia

Jakarta, Dec 15 (NationPress) Mount Semeru, positioned in Indonesia's East Java province, erupted on Sunday, which led the nation's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation to release an aviation alert.

A dense plume of white-to-grey ash ascended to 1,000 meters into the atmosphere, drifting northeast from the crater, as reported by the center.

Authorities issued the second-highest aviation alert, categorizing it as an orange Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation, which restricts flights within 5 kilometers of the volcano, according to news from Xinhua.

A danger zone of 3 kilometers has been established, while the southeastern area of the volcano has a hazard radius extending up to 8 kilometers from the crater.

In addition, officials have banned residents from participating in any activities within 500 meters of rivers originating from the slopes of the volcano due to the risk of lava flows and hot clouds that could reach up to 13 kilometers.

Mount Semeru rises to a height of 3,676 meters and is among Indonesia's 127 active volcanoes.

Previously, on November 3, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, another volcano in Indonesia, erupted, resulting in nine fatalities and the evacuation of thousands of residents.

This volcanic activity led to the cancellation of more than 160 flights to and from Bali.

To support emergency relief efforts, local authorities declared a state of emergency from November 4 until December 31.

In May, the Ibu volcano on Halmahera Island in the eastern Indonesian province of North Maluku experienced an eruption.

The Ibu volcano has erupted over 80 times since the start of this year.

In April, Mount Ruang volcano erupted. This 725-meter-high volcano is known as one of Indonesia's most active.

Mount Ruang last erupted in 2002, releasing pyroclastic flows that caused damage to the surrounding land and settlements.

Indonesia is home to roughly 500 mountains, among which 127 are active volcanoes, with many showing signs of heightened activity.

Located on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', Indonesia is an area rich in volcanoes and seismic activity, as it sits above several tectonic plates. The country harbors nearly 130 active volcanoes.
