Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 8 (NationPress) The Finnish President, Alexander Stubb, wrapped up his official visit to India on Sunday, receiving a warm farewell from Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took to X to announce, "The State Visit concludes successfully as President Alexander Stubb departs from India. He was warmly seen off at the airport by Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani."
This visit marks a pivotal moment in India-Finland relations, as both nations elevate their partnership to a 'Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability,' promising to enhance bilateral ties significantly.
During his trip, Stubb emphasized the increasing influence of India and the Global South in fostering a collaborative, equitable, and representative multilateral world system.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed optimism about the future of cooperation between India and Finland in vital technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, 5G, 6G telecommunications, advanced data analytics, and quantum computing. Talks between the two leaders also focused on strengthening research collaboration and promoting innovation.
Joint research initiatives involving India's Department of Science and Technology and Business Finland, the Finnish innovation funding agency, will concentrate on areas such as renewable energy, smart city development, hydrogen technologies, electric vehicles, and waste management.
Earlier in his address at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on March 5, Stubb remarked on the shifting balance of global power, asserting that the Global South possesses both demographic and economic advantages.
"We are witnessing a country with a growth rate of 7 percent, potentially extending to 2047, while simultaneously being the world's largest democracy. The time of a Western-dominated world is over; that disruption is clear, though it may take time for the West to accept. Nostalgia may teach us lessons but rarely offers solutions. Our analysis should start from reality, not from an idealized world," he stated.
Stubb underscored the troubling trend of employing violence as a tool of foreign policy globally. He referenced the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, West Asia, and Sudan, alongside his discussions with Prime Minister Modi, the UAE President, and the Qatar Emir.
He also reiterated External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's earlier comments regarding Europe, stating, "One of my favorite foreign ministers, Dr. Jaishankar, has noted, 'Europe must move beyond the notion that Europe's issues are the only global concerns.' I fully concur with you, Dr. Jaishankar. We must realize that conflicts like those in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan are indeed global challenges we all share."
