Mexico City, Sep 11 (NationPress) Tragically, three individuals lost their lives and over 50 people sustained injuries following the explosion of a gas tanker truck in Mexico City, with 19 of the injured in critical condition, as reported by local authorities.
The incident occurred on Zaragoza road beneath the Concordia bridge, as confirmed by Clara Brugada Molina, the head of government in the Mexican capital, in a post on the social media platform X on Wednesday (Mexico City time).
The explosion took place around 2:20 p.m. local time when the truck, which had a capacity of 49,500 litres, overturned. The injured individuals were promptly taken to various hospitals, as stated by local media.
Additionally, 18 vehicles were affected by the explosion, and among those taken to hospitals, 19 individuals are reported to be in serious condition, according to a report by the Xinhua news agency, referencing official sources.
Authorities have deployed police to secure the accident site, implementing roadblocks in the area as a precaution for residents and to preserve the scene for an investigation into the exact causes of the incident.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her heartfelt condolences regarding the loss of life resulting from this accident.
In a message posted on X, she stated, "We extend our solidarity and support to the families of the three individuals who sadly passed away and to those injured due to the explosion of a pipeline in Iztapalapa."
She further remarked, "The National Coordination of Civil Protection, National Guard, Secretariat of Defence, and the network of hospitals of the Government of Mexico are working alongside the head of Government, Clara Brugada Molina, and the authorities of Mexico City to support those affected," she stated.
"I also want to acknowledge the emergency services who are providing assistance in this unfortunate situation," added the Mexican President.
