Ghana Holds Presidential and Parliamentary Elections

Accra, Dec 7 (NationPress) Voters in Ghana headed to the polls on Saturday to choose a new President and 276 lawmakers.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who is at the helm of the opposition National Democratic Congress, and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who represents the ruling New Patriotic Party, are among the contenders for the presidency, alongside 11 other candidates. In total, 801 individuals, including 111 independents, are competing for the 276 seats in the unicameral legislature, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

As stated by the Ghana Electoral Commission, over 18 million eligible voters are registered to participate in this year's general elections.

The polls are scheduled to close at 5 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), after which vote counting and results will be announced at the polling station level.

The presidential candidate who secures 50 percent plus at least one vote will be declared the winner. In the event that no candidate meets this requirement, a run-off will take place.
