Ghana's President Initiates Inquiry into Fatalities from 2020 and 2024 Elections

Accra, Jan 11 (NationPress) Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has mandated the nation's police force to investigate the fatalities of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, aiming to pursue justice for both the victims and their families.
In a communication released by the president's office, Mahama directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to form a specialized task force within the Criminal Investigations Department dedicated solely to these election-related homicide cases.
According to the letter, “The task force is also required to assess electoral security measures and scrutinize the conduct and actions of security personnel stationed at the polling places to evaluate their involvement or negligence,” it stated.
The president urged the committee to provide regular updates to the government throughout the investigation to uphold transparency and public confidence, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Mahama was sworn in on Tuesday after securing victory in the presidential election held in December of the previous year.
A significant number of Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds, along with party supporters, congregated at the Black Star Square in Accra, the nation's capital, to witness the grand inauguration ceremony.
The event also welcomed several African heads of state and international dignitaries.
During the inauguration, Mahama remarked that the occasion signifies a new era in Ghana's history and offers a unique chance to realign the nation in various aspects.
“We have encountered serious economic challenges as we transitioned from one crisis to another in recent times. However, there is optimism ahead, and today signifies the commencement of a fresh opportunity, a chance to redefine our governance and economic strategies. Together, we can rejuvenate our cherished nation,” Mahama expressed.
He committed to addressing youth unemployment by establishing strong collaborations with the private sector to generate decent and well-paying job opportunities.
“In this significant victory, I perceive a clarion call, particularly from the youth of Ghana, and this moment serves as a strong affirmation that your voices matter and that your future must remain our priority,” he asserted.
Born in 1958 in Ghana's Savannah region, Mahama previously held the office of president in Ghana from 2012 to 2017.
