Ghana Establishes Transition Team for Seamless Power Handover

Accra, Dec 12 (NationPress) Ghana has officially formed a joint transition team that includes representatives from both the outgoing government and the incoming administration to oversee a seamless transfer of power.

During a ceremony held in the national capital of Accra, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the team, emphasizing their dedication to the transition process.

"As we initiate this transitional phase, I urge all members of the transition team from both sides to approach this duty with a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect," stated Akufo-Addo at the inauguration.

In response, Mahama called on team members to allow the spirit of nationalism to guide their efforts, prioritizing the unity and collective welfare of Ghana, while pledging his complete cooperation with Akufo-Addo throughout and beyond this transitional period.

The joint transition team is tasked with overseeing the transfer of governmental operations and executive authority, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

On Wednesday, Mahama visited Akufo-Addo at the presidency, where both leaders recognized each other’s contributions to the advancement of democracy in Ghana.

Ghanaians cast their votes on December 7 to elect a new president and 276 members of parliament.

Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress, won 56.55% of the valid votes, thereby being declared the winner of the presidential election.

A statement from the presidency on December 10 revealed that Akufo-Addo had called Mahama to congratulate him on his electoral victory.

"President Akufo-Addo expressed his determination to ensure a smooth transfer of power on January 7, 2025, and looks forward to collaborating with the president-elect and his team to fulfill this objective," the statement noted.

Additionally, the incumbent president praised the Electoral Commission and the people of Ghana for conducting a successful election, which he stated reflects the enduring resilience of the country’s democracy.

Akufo-Addo encouraged Ghanaians to unite and collaborate to fortify democracy and uphold the rule of law within the nation.
