Guterres Commends New India-China Accord Advancing Border Relations

United Nations, Dec 19 (NationPress) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his approval of the recent accord reached between India and China aimed at enhancing their diplomatic relations and making constructive strides on border matters, as stated by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric on Wednesday.

"We acknowledge the beneficial outcome of this bilateral endeavor—an extremely significant diplomatic engagement," he remarked.

He emphasized that resolving international conflicts through bilateral initiatives should be applauded.

After a hiatus of five years, India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi convened in Beijing on Monday for an official meeting of the Special Representatives, a regular high-level discussion that had been paused following the military clash between the two nations in 2020.

India's External Affairs Ministry stated post-meeting, "They concurred on the importance of stable, predictable, and friendly India-China relations for both regional and global peace and prosperity."

"They provided constructive guidance for cross-border collaboration and exchanges, including the revival of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, and border trade," it added.

The recommencement of the regular high-level discussions followed an agreement between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping of China during their meeting in Kazan in October.

Dujarric noted that unresolved international disputes tend to dominate global headlines, whereas many disputes do reach resolution.

"Numerous international disputes are resolved, either through UN mediation or through bilateral communication and efforts. Such resolutions deserve recognition and commendation," he stated.

On Wednesday, India and China agreed to provide "constructive guidance" for cross-border cooperation and exchanges, including the reinstatement of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers, and border trade during NSA Ajit Doval's visit to Beijing.

This was revealed following the 23rd meeting of the Special Representatives (SRs) of India and China, which was attended by NSA Doval and Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and China's Foreign Minister.

The meeting held on Wednesday in Beijing marked the first encounter between the Special Representatives since tensions arose in the Western Sector of the India-China border areas in 2020.
