New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) In a significant move, India and Namibia convened for the fifth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in New Delhi from January 19-20. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations in critical sectors such as health, Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), agriculture, defence, and critical minerals.
The meeting was co-chaired by Janesh Kain, Joint Secretary (East and Southern Africa) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Ambassador Charles Josob, Acting Head of Department for Bilateral Relations and Cooperation in Namibia's Ministry of International Relations and Trade. They addressed various regional and international concerns of shared interest, including cooperation at the United Nations, as noted in a statement from the MEA.
The statement further highlighted, "During the FOC, both nations undertook a thorough review of the comprehensive spectrum of India-Namibia relations, including vital areas of bilateral collaboration like trade, investment, health and pharmaceuticals, education, capacity building, defence, agriculture, infrastructure development, consular matters, as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges."
The meeting offered a platform to assess the progress of outcomes from recent high-level exchanges and explore avenues to bolster cooperation across various fields. It was mutually agreed that the next round of Foreign Office Consultations would take place in Windhoek at a convenient time.
In July of the previous year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a State Visit to Namibia, engaging in extensive discussions with Namibia's President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at the State House in Windhoek. They focused on further enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in defence, maritime security, digital technology and UPI, agriculture, health and pharmaceuticals, energy, and critical minerals.
During their discussions, PM Modi and President Nandi-Ndaitwah also addressed global issues of mutual concern, agreeing to fortify the global fight against terrorism and committing to work together to elevate the voice of the Global South.
Additionally, PM Modi had the honor of addressing the Joint Session of the Parliament of Namibia, and during this historic State Visit, he was awarded Namibia's highest civilian accolade, the 'Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis.'
