New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) - The Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), P Kumaran, convened a meeting with a Cambodian delegation led by Secretary of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, KHY Sovanratana, in New Delhi on Friday. During the meeting, Secretary (East) Shri P Kumaran engaged with the Cambodian delegation to assess India’s capacity-building initiatives for Cambodia. This includes the training of Cambodian diplomats at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS) under the Ministry of External Affairs. They also explored avenues for expanding cooperation in the realms of trade and investments, heritage conservation, and development partnerships, as communicated by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X.
In the preceding month, India and Cambodia reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening bilateral defence cooperation through high-level military interactions held in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, according to an official statement.
On the margins of the Army-to-Army Staff Talks in Phnom Penh, Major General Akaash Johar, the Indian Army's Additional Director General for International Cooperation, met with the Commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, Lt General Mao Sophan. The discussion revolved around enhancing joint military engagements, expanding training cooperation, and fortifying bilateral defence relations.
The two nations stressed the importance of increasing joint military exercises, broadening the scope of training collaborations, and enhancing coordination within the defence sector.
Special focus was placed on military capacity building, professional military education, and the exchange of operational experiences as essential components of their cooperation.
Officials noted India’s intention to transform defence partnerships with allied nations into practical, ground-level collaboration, extending beyond formal discussions. Cambodia acknowledged the high training standards and professional capabilities of the Indian armed forces, expressing interest in sending more personnel to India for training and specialized educational programs in the future.
Both parties reiterated their commitment to strengthening defence ties as part of a long-term strategic partnership aimed at fostering regional peace, stability, and security.
India and Cambodia enjoy a friendly and cordial relationship, with Cambodia being a vital partner in the context of India’s 'Act East' policy and ASEAN initiatives. As per statements from the Indian Embassy in Cambodia, collaboration between the two nations has broadened across several sectors, including institutional capacity building, human resource development, and financial support for infrastructure projects, social security programs, and defence capacity building.
