India's Ambassador to Greece, Ravi Shankar, on Tuesday, 11 August, held a high-level meeting with General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS), in Athens, the Indian Embassy confirmed. The meeting signals continued momentum in defence and strategic engagement between India and Greece under the bilateral Strategic Partnership framework.

Defence Diplomacy at the Top

The Embassy shared a glimpse of the meeting on social media platform X, describing it as a direct engagement between the two countries' defence establishments. Ambassador Ravi Shankar has been actively building ties across Greece's military leadership since presenting his credentials to the President of the Hellenic Republic on 16 July, when he conveyed warm wishes on behalf of India's leadership and pledged to 'actively work to add substance to the India-Greece Strategic Partnership.'

Air Force Cooperation in Focus

Last month, Ambassador Shankar also met Lt. General Demosthenes Grigoriadis, Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, to discuss ongoing cooperation initiatives between the two air forces. According to the Indian Embassy, two multilateral exercises have been central to deepening this partnership: India's participation in INIOCHOS — a major annual multinational air combat training exercise hosted by the Hellenic Air Force — and Greece's participation in Tarang Shakti, the Indian Air Force's (IAF) largest biennial multinational air combat exercise. The Embassy noted that these joint exercises 'have fostered mutual understanding and partnerships' between the two nations.

Workforce and Economic Ties on the Agenda

Beyond defence, Ambassador Shankar met Giorgos Chioureas, Mayor of the West Mani region, to explore economic collaboration. Discussions reportedly covered the deployment of Indian workers in hospitality, construction, and the farm sector in the West Mani region. The Embassy also flagged tourism — both inbound and outbound — as 'another promising area' for bilateral cooperation, reflecting a broader effort to diversify India-Greece ties beyond strategic affairs.

Diplomatic Context

India and Greece elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in recent years, with defence, trade, and people-to-people links identified as key pillars. Ambassador Shankar's back-to-back engagements with military chiefs and regional mayors within weeks of presenting his credentials underscore the pace at which New Delhi is seeking to operationalise this partnership. This is consistent with India's broader push to deepen ties with European Union member states that hold strategic geography in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Further diplomatic and defence engagements between the two sides are expected in the months ahead as both countries look to translate strategic intent into concrete outcomes.
