India and Japan on Friday, 7 August held high-level discussions on deepening bilateral defence cooperation, with India's Ambassador to Japan Nagma Mallick meeting Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in Tokyo. The meeting underscored the growing strategic convergence between the two nations in the Indo-Pacific region.

What Was Discussed

Ambassador Mallick paid a courtesy call on Defence Minister Koizumi, during which both sides exchanged views on opportunities to further strengthen defence cooperation. The Indian Embassy in Japan confirmed the meeting, noting that the two sides discussed avenues for enhanced bilateral engagement.

Koizumi emphasised that defence cooperation between India and Japan is indispensable — not only for both countries, but for the broader peace and stability of the region and the world. Japan's Ministry of Defence stated: 'The defence cooperation between Japan and India, which is based on the Indo-Pacific, is essential not only for both countries but also for the peace and stability of the region and the world. The Ministry of Defence and the Self-Defense Forces will further deepen defence cooperation between Japan and India.'

Recent Diplomatic Momentum

The 7 August meeting is the latest in a series of high-level engagements between the two nations. On 16 July, Koizumi attended a reception at the residence of Ambassador Mallick, where both sides pledged to strengthen defence ties. Koizumi had noted at the time: 'Pledged with Ambassador Nagma Mohammadi Malik to strengthen Japan-India defence ties.'

Earlier, on 13 July, India and Japan held the 8th Defence Policy Dialogue in Tokyo, covering cooperation in emerging domains including defence industrial collaboration, technological innovation, cyber security, space, and other areas of shared strategic interest. The Indian delegation at that dialogue was led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, while the Japanese side was represented by Vice Minister of Defence for International Affairs Kano Koji.

Key Areas of Bilateral Defence Engagement

The 8th Defence Policy Dialogue reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral defence engagements, according to India's Ministry of Defence. This included military-to-military exchanges, cooperation between joint headquarters, maritime cooperation, defence exercises, capacity building, and defence equipment and technology cooperation — particularly in maritime technology — along with enhanced institutional interactions.

During Defence Secretary Singh's visit to Tokyo, he also met Koizumi separately and conveyed the greetings of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Both sides reaffirmed the growing momentum of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Indo-Pacific Commitment

The two countries reiterated their shared commitment to promoting a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region founded on respect for international law. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the growing convergence on regional and global security issues and agreed to continue close coordination in the Indo-Pacific. This comes amid heightened geopolitical activity in the region, with both India and Japan deepening ties with like-minded partners.

With multiple senior-level interactions within weeks, the India-Japan defence partnership appears to be entering a more structured and operationally focused phase.
