Kathmandu, April 6 (NationPress) The Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, engaged in discussions with the Himalayan country's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal on Monday, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation.
Khanal took up the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs following the inauguration of Balendra Shah as the new Prime Minister of Nepal on March 27.
Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared on X, "Ambassador Naveen Srivastava made a courtesy visit to Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal at the Ministry today."
During their conversation, Ambassador Srivastava relayed External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar's best wishes to Khanal on his recent appointment.
"A variety of topics concerning Nepal-India relations and cooperation were addressed," added the Ministry.
Earlier, on March 27, EAM Jaishankar had expressed his congratulations to Shisir Khanal on assuming the role of Nepal's Foreign Minister, indicating a willingness to collaborate to strengthen ties between both nations.
"Warm regards to Shisir Khanal on becoming the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nepal. I am looking forward to collaborating closely with him to reinforce our longstanding partnership," EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Shah on his ascension to the role of Prime Minister, expressing a commitment to enhance the friendship between the two nations for the benefit of their citizens.
Shah acknowledged Prime Minister Modi's congratulatory note, expressing optimism in advancing the comprehensive ties between the two nations.
The Prime Minister's Office of Nepal stated, "Thank you, PM Narendra Modi, for your warm words and wishes. I am enthusiastic about collaborating closely with you to foster the multifaceted relations between our two countries for the prosperity of our people."
On March 26, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), which achieved a significant victory in the recent parliamentary elections with nearly a two-thirds majority, elected Shah as its parliamentary party leader. He subsequently became the 47th Prime Minister of Nepal.
The 35-year-old ex-Mayor of Kathmandu is among the youngest individuals to hold the Prime Ministerial position in Nepal.
The relationship between India and Nepal is characterized by profound people-to-people connections and shared aspects of religion, language, and culture. India stands as Nepal's largest development partner, with a substantial portion of developmental assistance directed towards extensive infrastructure projects funded through grants, as noted by the Indian Embassy in Nepal. India has actively engaged in providing development assistance to Nepal since the 1950s.
