How Is India Managing US Pressure While Leading BRICS?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 10 (NationPress) India's significant challenge revolves around navigating its foreign policy priorities between the United States and BRICS, especially as multiple members of the bloc face heightened scrutiny from Washington. While India perceives BRICS as a platform to uphold the multilateral world order, other nations like Russia and China view it as a geostrategic tool to counter the USA, as outlined in a report published on Friday.
As noted in the India Narrative report, India's current approach towards the US, which is dictated by national interests, diverges from that of other BRICS members regarding this matter.
“In the midst of competing global interests, escalating trade tensions, and the US’s tariff impositions, India is set to assume the BRICS presidency this year. This presidency allows India to advocate for the interests of the ‘Global South’, promoting the demand for a fairer representation in the global financial system and a more substantial voice in international matters. Historically, India has championed the aspirations of the marginalized,” the report elaborated.
“Consequently, it has endorsed bolstering Global South Cooperation, emphasizing inclusive and sustainable growth and collaboration as stated in the 2025 BRICS Rio de Janeiro Declaration. India has put forth the 5 Cs for the Global South: consultation, cooperation, communication, creativity, and capacity building to foster collective advancement,” it added.
The report further highlighted that India's tenure as BRICS president will concentrate on promoting multilateralism, with a dedication to reforming and enhancing global governance to establish a more just, equitable, effective, and accountable international and multilateral framework.
“India emphasizes the importance of partnering with various stakeholders, showcasing initiatives like the G20 Presidency, development partnerships, and alliances, including BRICS. Hence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described BRICS as India’s greatest asset in fostering confidence to promote diversity and multipolarity through the platform, which will serve as a compass in steering through current global pressures,” it stated.
The report further mentioned that the principal challenge for India’s presidency will be addressing US pressure and the subsequent ripple effects within the organization.
“The USA initially imposed a 50% tariff on both India and Brazil, the highest among the BRICS nations, resulting in discontent within the group. Nevertheless, India is avoiding a confrontational stance with Washington on this issue, unlike Brazil, which has threatened retaliation against what it terms ‘tariff blackmail’,” it noted.
“Instead, New Delhi insists that BRICS nations need to rectify their trade disparities with India. Indeed, BRICS serves as an alternative for the non-Western world, liberating developing nations from the compulsion to cater to the West for economic support. This aligns with India’s longstanding policy of empowering the disadvantaged in international relations,” it further emphasized.
