Mogadishu, April 22 (NationPress) The International Organization for Migration (IOM), recognized as the UN migration agency, has officially launched the Migration Response Center (MRC) in Burao, located in Somaliland, a self-declared region of Somalia.
The IOM announced that this inauguration signifies a crucial step forward in enhancing the availability of vital protection services and assistance for migrants in transit throughout the area, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Prestage Murima, the deputy chief of mission for IOM Somalia, remarked that the launch of the Burao MRC exemplifies the persistent dedication of the IOM and its partners to meet the needs of at-risk migrants.
"By fortifying protection mechanisms and offering life-saving services, we strive to ensure that no migrant is overlooked," Murima stated in a release made in Burao.
This newly established MRC, which becomes part of an expanding network of centers located in key migration corridors, will act as an essential hub for protection services and voluntary return support for migrants in transition, as well as those who are stranded along migration paths.
The IOM indicated that the center will offer a variety of services, including emergency shelter, medical care for vulnerable migrants, assisted voluntary return, mental health and psychosocial support, information sharing, and the distribution of non-food items.
The Migrant Protection and Assistance Program of IOM Somalia, responsible for managing the MRC network across Somaliland and the wider region, continues to collaborate with government partners and donors to broaden access to protection and support services for migrants.
